The first half of the month has been particularly dry. Greens and tees are being watered overnight on a daily basis. The cold dry weather has slowed growth on greens and we are feeding greens as much as possible to repair damaged areas caused by fusarium over the winter months.
Maintenance work completed
All sprinklers around greens and tees have been checked and we have replaced 11 sprinkler heads around greens and 19 around the tees. Most replacements have been due to damage caused by vandalism.
On a similar note, we have had 26 Rakes and 12 flags stolen in the past 4 weeks. This is fairly typical at this time of year.
Major repairs have been carried out to burst pipes on irrigation system on back of 11th tee, front of 8th Tee, front of 14th tee. There have been a number of minor leaks also repaired.
Facts about irrigation system
There is approximately 7 miles of pipe work with 88 sprinkler heads around greens, 74 around tees and 152 on fairways.
We can water greens (and surrounding area) and tees automatically via timer but fairways have to be done manually (Maximum of one set of 3 at a time).
We do not pay for water which we get from a bore hole we installed a few years ago. Although we are limited to using 10,000 litres in any 24-hour period so we do not pay anything for water. This saves the club approx. £10,000 – £15,000 per year.
